The Centre to Speak at UN Global Compact UK and USA Network's Child Labour Webinar Series

About the child labour webinar series:

To commemorate the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, UN Global Compact Network UK & UN Global Compact Network USA are launching the Elimination of Child Labour Webinar Series. The five sessions feature a series of discussions over the course of the year, to raise awareness on the importance of the elimination of child labour and to translate business aspirations into business actions. The series will bring private sector representatives together with UN agencies, academia, and civil society to discuss the challenges on the ground, as well as share best practice examples to eliminate child labour and accelerate progress to end child labour for good.

About the upcoming webinar with The Centre: "Child Labour: Exploring How the Informal Sector Feeds into Formal Supply Chains"

There is a high prevalence of child labour in the informal economy, in both urban and rural settings. A significant share of child labour occurs in the upstream reaches of supply chains, in the production of raw materials and other inputs to final export products. This issue is particularly widespread in agriculture, artisanal mining, manufacturing, street work, and domestic work. 1 While monitoring the informal sector is challenging, it remains essential for all companies to mitigate these risks in their supply chain. Focusing on supply chains helps identify where and how the formal business sector intersects with the informal sector.

The main goal of this webinar is to discuss the high prevalence of child labour in the informal economy, and provide clarity on how it feeds into formal supply chains. Experts in this space will explain how this phenomenon can occur in various industries, as well as advise the private sector on how best to tackle it.

Speaker line-up:

  • Adam Gordon, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Local Network USA

  • Ines Kämpfer, CEO, The Centre for Child Rights and Business

  • Victoria Solbert, Standards and Implementation Resources Director, Fair Trade USA

  • Dr. Vivek Soundararajan, Associate Professor in International Management, University of Bath

  • Quintin Lake, Executive Director, FiftyEight

  • Amayèle Dia, Child Labour in Mining Portfolio Coordinator, PACT

The Centre will discuss some of the biggest challenges that companies face when trying to address child labour in their supply chains, and how can they best overcome these, what child labour looks like in the informal economy and how stakeholders can come together to collaborate.
