Across many supply chains, summer and peak production periods often bring increased labour demand, while many young people aged 16–17 look for opportunities to earn income, gain work experience and support their families.
When managed responsibly, youth employment can help suppliers fill seasonal labour gaps while providing young people with safe and meaningful work opportunities. However, without proper systems, suppliers risk unintentionally exposing young workers to hazardous tasks, excessive working hours, or other conditions that violate labour standards and create compliance risks.
Brands and regulators increasingly expect suppliers to demonstrate clear systems for responsible hiring and management of young workers as part of broader human rights due diligence.
Drawing on more than 15 years of experience addressing child labour risks across global supply chains, this training provides practical guidance on how to hire and manage young workers responsibly while meeting buyer expectations and protecting young workers’ safety and development.
Participants will gain practical guidance on how to employ young workers safely and responsibly in line with international standards and buyer expectations.
Topics include:
Understanding the difference between child labour and permissible young worker employment
Legal requirements governing employment of workers under 18
Responsible recruitment practices to prevent underage hiring
Age verification and onboarding systems
Identifying hazardous work and prohibited tasks for young workers
Safe job allocation and supervision of young workers
Managing working hours, overtime and night work restrictions
Practical case studies based on real supply chain situations
Communicating effectively with brands and auditors regarding young worker employment
This training uses a practical and interactive learning approach, combining real case studies, group discussion and practical exercises.
Participants will:
Work through real scenarios suppliers face when hiring and managing young workers
Review practical examples of policies, procedures and factory systems
Learn from The Centre’s on-the-ground experience supporting companies and suppliers to address child labour risks in global supply chains
The focus is on applied learning—turning international standards and buyer requirements into practical systems that work in day-to-day operations.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Strengthen company systems for responsible hiring and management of young workers
Reduce risks related to underage recruitment and child labour
Ensure safe and appropriate working conditions for young workers
Align factory practices with buyer expectations and human rights due diligence requirements
Safely integrate young workers into the workforce during peak or seasonal labour demand
