As sustainability reporting requirements continue to evolve across Asia, a key stakeholder remains largely overlooked: children.
On July 8, 2026, UNICEF and The Centre for Child Rights and Business will launch a new regional study titled “Making Children Count: Child Rights and the Future of ESG in Asia”. The study examines how 1,399 publicly listed companies across nine emerging Asian markets disclose and address child rights within their sustainability reporting.
The analysis reveals a significant gap. While most companies report commitments to human rights, very few explicitly recognise children as stakeholders or assess child rights as a material sustainability issue. As a result, important business risks and impacts, including those linked to supply chains, products and services, environmental impacts, digital safety and workforce policies, remain largely invisible in ESG disclosures.
Drawing on findings from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, the report provides practical insights for companies, investors, regulators and stock exchanges seeking to strengthen due diligence, improve disclosure quality and better manage child-rights-related risks.
The launch event will feature a presentation of key findings, expert reflections and a multi-stakeholder discussion exploring the future of child rights within sustainability reporting, responsible investment and ESG frameworks across Asia.
