The Child Rights Action Hub Malaysia has soft-launched seven practical child rights tools to help smallholders and mid-sized palm oil plantations identify, prevent and address child rights risks in their operations and supply chains.
The tools were developed through consultation and validation with plantation companies, supply chain actors, smallholders, cooperatives and civil society organisations. Two virtual validation workshops held in May brought together 33 participants from 12 organisations, whose feedback contributed to the finalisation and formatting of the tools.
The tools provide practical and accessible guidance that can be applied by smallholders and mid-sized plantations to strengthen child rights practices within their operations. These include posters explaining children's rights in Malaysia and how to support children in palm oil settings, tips for protecting young workers aged 15-17 from hazardous work, guidance on what kind of jobs children and youth can and can't do in the palm oil sector, a child labour and young worker checklist, child labour prevention and remediation guidelines for mid-sized palm oil estates and employment templates.
What’s next?
Put the tools into practice. Mid-sized plantations are invited to join dedicated workshops to explore how these tools can help identify and address child rights risks.
